Zone 1 is the area of high intensity gardening. Ideally it is the area closest to the house and includes intensive vegetable gardens, as well as other plants that need frequent maintenance or harvesting, such as a lemon tree.

Our Zone 1 garden consists of a greenhouse, our children's garden, and our own vegie patch, placed along the pathway to the poultry house, which is on the border of Zones 1 and 2.

Frequent pickers such lettuces are planted along pathways for ease of maintenance. As lettuces grow tastiest in shady conditions we have utilised the shade cast by the greenhouse to create a self seeding salad garden.
