SORRY! All stock of the RR1050 has been returned to the importer. A fault with the backlight on this unit means that they are unacceptable to Procon Technology. I was hoping that the importer would withdraw them from sale and replace them with new 'working' units but unfortunately they seem to think that "most customers won't notice (this defect)". We are currently looking around for a unit and a supplier that we can trust! It is becoming increasingly frustrating that CHINESE MADE PRODUCTS have such variablity in quality. When they work they often work well and represent good value for money, BUT we have had instances where the entire shipment is 'unacceptable' in quality and have returned them. I recommend that all customers do the same - DON'T PUT UP WITH INFERIOR CHINESE (PRC) PRODUCTS! Where possible we avoid 'no-name' brand products and prefer to purchase products from Japanese, Taiwanese, Singaporean or Malaysian companies.

These universal IR learning remote control units are capable of replacing nine or more remotes in your home, office or school. These good-looking remote controls have a comprehensive list of features that will impress any techno-freak, but still is so simple to use with their well laid-out keypads, slide-back covers for secondary functions and easy-to-read LCD displays with backlight (which turns on and also illuminates the pushbuttons only when it's dark). The LCD display lets you know exactly what mode the remote is in. e.g. in one of nine device modes or in learn or edit mode etc. This provides a huge advantage over cheaper remotes and is worth paying extra for! There are 34 primary keys (only 27 were on the AR1708) and another 20 secondary keys - hidden under a sliding cover (removed on pictures above). A 'macro' key allows up to 20 complex sequences (with a programmable delay of 1-99 seconds between key presses) to be repeated ... setup your TV and HI-FI to play DVD's by pressing only two buttons! A backlight is provided in low-light conditions as well as a key-press tone which can be turned off if necessary. Note, unlike the AR1708 unit, the RR1050 remote uses the standard 0-9 number key arrangement, has separate power on and off keys and cursor keys for navigation on DVD players etc. One huge feature of the RR1050 is the CLONE function that allows one remote to be copied to another unit within a matter of minutes. Great for schools or businesses which need identical remotes or if you need a 'backup' unit!
Customer feedback: 'I am keen to buy this unit. Is it returnable if it's not able to perform as I wish?' Norma P. Australia. Yes, we offer a 14 day return policy if not satisfied...of course, shipping costs are not refunded. Norma, who's 70 years old, purchased the AR1708 after buying a cheap universal remote from Kmart and returning it ... like I said, it's worth paying a bit extra for a good universal remote! Mr P. Sloss also reports that he tried an expensive remote from Dick Smith Electronics and it wouldn't work with his Luxman DVD player. The RR1050 not only worked but he was also able to program the Foxtel remote and the air-conditioner remote as well!
Note, a number of customers have purchased this unit after trying a touch-screen type remote. They found the touch screen provided no tactile feedback - making it difficult to use. Also it was easily broken if dropped or sat on - a real concern if you have kids or even if you don't! I've used one of the AR1708 remotes myself for over five years and it's been great. If you update your DVD player for example, you can always program the remote to control it - no worries! It never becomes outdated like the pre-programmed remotes do.

Further information: The remotes measure 225x65x30mm or 9x2.5x1.25in (HxWxD) and require 4 x AAA batteries (included). These remotes require that you teach them all commands by activating your existing remotes until the code is recorded. This is a straight-forward but laborious process, with your patience rewarded with a single remote programmed exactly to your requirements. Note, the remote remembers the codes even if the batteries are removed. Once programmed, you will then wonder how you ever put up with juggling all those other remote controls! Don't forget, it can duplicate any IR remote control including; TV, Cable TV (e.g. Foxtel), Hi-Fi (amplifier), VCR, DVD, DAT, video camera, air-conditioners etc. You could even control the lights (on/off and dim) using special control units and control toys such as fischertechnik using the IR Control Unit. Click here for more information. This fischertechnik unit could also be used to control other things around the home such as open and close curtains etc. In fact, more than nine remotes can be replaced because any button can be programmed to control any device. This means, for example, that the V1 device setting can, not only control the TV, but the PLAY, FF, FB, STOP buttons etc. can be programmed to control the VCR or DVD! Most convenient because you don't have to keep switching between devices. e.g. the volume control on the VCR setting can be used to control the volume on the TV or Hi-Fi etc. Don't forget, you can also re-program the LCD display to show 'Camera' instead of 'Video 4' etc. One final point, worth remembering, is that this learning remote also allows five keys to be programmed with a sequence of codes. In fact, up to three codes, one of which is transmitted with each press of the button, can be programmed into the five special keys! Note, this function is necessary for some devices, such as the RCA TV I have!
Hot Tips: 1. When in the 'Learn' mode, always setup this remote first then place your existing remote 'head-to-head' with it (within 10-20mm) and then press the button you wish to record. After programming all buttons for that remote - test each one. If any operate erratically then record that function again. 2. One way to program dual code transmissions (i.e. one code is transmitted then when the button is pressed again another code is transmitted - i.e. it alternates between two codes), is to program the first code on one button and the other code on an adjacent button. 3. This remote is more 'power hungry' than most so make sure you use only good-quality alkaline batteries (which should last more than 6 months) and replace them when the 'battery low' symbol appears or the backlight fails to operate. We now recommend the use of alkaline batteries such as Varta re-charged using the Rezap battery doctor.
My opinion of the AR-1727 Digitech '16 in 1' Universal Remote: This is a very low cost (under $100) touch screen unit that has preprogrammed codes and a learning mode. The first problem is deciding to use the preprogrammed codes or just use the learning mode. Nearly 2,000 codes are preprogrammed with up to 30 codes for one manufacturer. After a lot of stuffing around, I found that none of my devices - TV, VCR, DVD or HiFi (with CD, Tape, Radio and Graphic Equalizer) would work properly. The only thing I got to work was the power on-off and volume control functions of the HiFi system! Part of the problem, I think, is that many branded products are actually re-branded third party devices and have completely different remote codes to the standard brandname codes! I then tried the learning function and found this a bit hit-or-miss. Certainly more difficult to program than the RR1050 remote. After trying a few operations, I think I agree with my customers who have bought the RR1050 after taking back or throwing away a touch-screen unit. There is no tactile feedback and it's frustrating when a button doesn't work because you tend to press the screen harder which could break it! Besides that, there's not enough separation between buttons so it's too easy to press the wrong button - I found this particulary frustrating when trying to program the AR1727. Finally, I found this remote frustrating because the signal is not as strong as the RR1050 meaning that you have to sit directly in front of the TV being controlled - if you're off to one side the AR1727 didn't work! In summary, if you have one of these cheap remotes throw it away and get a quality unit like the RR1050. Better still, don't bother with these cheap units in the first place because you'll waste so much time just setting them up for a disappointing result!
Remember, I've had my AR1708 for five years and have had a new DVD player and VCR installed in that time with no problem controlling them from this remote. It's also a very solid unit which has been dropped and sat on and is starting to lose it's shine but it continues to work beautifully. That's why I continue to use and recommend the RR1050 universal learning remote control!
